“Well then- Does that help?” Rooster asked.

“What? Did what help?”

Rooster sighed. “Never mind.”

“Squeak?” The squirrel asked as it leaned over the side of the furry hat. It pointed at Gertie, Rooster, and Marren. “Squeakum?”

The Woolly Warrior with the longbow rolled his eyes up to look at the squirrel. “You said the Mistress said to bring them to her.”

The squirrel pointed at Honus. “Squeak.” Then he pointed at the others. “Squeakery!”

“Now just a minute there, Master Squirrel,” Rooster said. “Let’s not be hasty.”

“What?” Marren said. “What’s going on?”

“Hate to muck it up. You know how she can be,” the Warrior said. “Gonna bring them all just in case. Follow the order or get tossed to the border,” he said, quoting the Warrior Handbook that they had all signed. In blood. Their own.”

“That squirrel wants us dead.” Rooster said.

“Squeakery Squeaktacious.”

“Really most sincerely dead, in fact.” Rooster translated.

Marren struggled against his bindings. “Let me out of here!”

“Shut up, Munchkin,” the Warrior said. “No one’s getting killed.”

“That’s a relief.” Marren said.

“At least until the Mistress say so.”

“Squeak!” The squirrel pointed at Marren.

“Who’s this Mistress?” Honus asked.

“The Witch of the South, of course,” Gertie said. “Now don’t pester the nice guards that have said they won’t kill us.”

“Squeak!”

“Until our executions,” Rooster translated again.

“How is it you understand that squirrel?” Honus asked.

“Can’t you speak with other humans?”

Honus considered that. “I know a little German and Swedish. And a few words of Sak and Fox. But that’s it.”

“Oh, well. If you can speak fox, then you should understand Squirrel. They’re pretty similar,” observed Rooster.

“Like Goat and Trout.” Gertie offered.

“No, Fox and Sak are Indian tribes. They’re not animals. And there are lots of languages I don’t know. Lots.”

“Pathetic.” Rooster said. “And kind of sad.”

“Goats and trout speak the same language?” Honus asked.

“We’re practically related.” Gertie said. “In fact, if you consider the fact that...”

“You know why you don’t hear us talking?” The bow-carrying Woolly Warrior interrupted.

“No?” Honus said.

“I could make a guess,” Gertie said.

“Because we don’t want to hear each other’s voices right now. And we sure don’t want to hear yours!”

“That was going to be my guess.”

“Squeak!” Added the squirrel. He shook his little fist for emphasis.

“Huh.” Rooster said, having never been insulted by a squirrel before.
